«…sounds like a long black train movin’ down the line…»
"Dust Bowl" was a term born in the hard times from the people who lived in the drought-stricken region during the great depression. The term was first used in a dispatch from Robert Geiger, an AP correspondent in Guymon, and within a few short hours the term was used all over the nation. The "Dust Bowl Days", also known as the "Dirty Thirties", took its toll on Cimarron County. The decade was full of extremes: blizzards, tornadoes, floods, droughts, and dirt storms. (Excerpts from "The DustBowl, Men, Dirt and Depression" by Paul Bonnifield).
Dustbowl were formed in May of 2006 with the will to play somekinda hillbilly stuff...something new and very vintage at the same time. Their Dustbowl thing is about the train's lonesome whistle sound, the rails’ sound when this long black iron horse is riding 'em, songs about love, about losin 'someone you love, about being sorrowbound and lonely, about being a-driftin' and a-ramblin', about being a nowdays "hobo", about pickin' a tune with some friends...
The bands’ influences are Woody Guthrie’s hobo songs, Hank Williams moanin’ sound, Blind Willie McTell’s blues, old traditional folk anthems…the gospel tradition, Sun Records and rock-a-billy stuff…as Carl Perkins did, Jeffrey Lee Pierce ghost is always there and the Punk Revolution is there...The Clash…and John Stenibeck’s “Grapes of Wrath” is there too.
Dustbowl call their music “Freight Train Sound” because they dig Johnny Cash & Tennessee Three “train” rhythm style and because they don’t want to be part of today's Country music.
